The Impact of Gas from Groningen

We also want to share knowledge beyond Groningen about the social consequences of gas extraction in Groningen. That is why we organized the program The Impact of Gas from Groningen together with Pakhuis de Zwijger (Amsterdam) on October 27th 2022.

Despite the findings of the parliamentary inquiry hearings, the debate keeps flaring up: should gas be extracted from the Groningen field again? This meeting will provide more insight into the gas production case and the consequences of gas production for residents. Which (international) interests play a role and why are these findings important for the Netherlands as a whole?

Experts and researchers discussed and gave an overview of what gas extraction, earthquakes, damage to homes, reinforcement, and demolition of properties is doing to residents.

Tom Postmes is professor of Social Psychology at the University of Groningen and also the scientific director of the Knowledge Platform. He has been researching the (health) consequences of gas extraction since 2015.

Hanneke Pot is a researcher and lecturer at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen and external research fellow at the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD). Together with a research team, she conducted research into the effects of "Experiment Krewerd". This is a residents' initiative in which residents would be given more control over the (accelerated) reinforcement of their homes. Hanneke talks about the challenges and the various obstacles they encountered with this approach.

Nicole van Eijkern and Eline de Flines, mother and daughter, share their story as residents of the area. The characteristic property they lived in has been demolished in the meantime, and a new house has taken its place. The impact of gas extraction on their lives and relationships was and still is very severe. They share how they have struggled through this process for almost 10 years, how it has stood between them and how they successfully came out of it.

The program was led by Wilbert van de Kamp
