It is well known that seismic movements caused by gas production are a risk to residents. As a result, they feel less safe in their homes, they may develop health problems, and their trust in the government is severely diminished. The number of residents who will be in trouble is not yet well calculated. The Gas Production Support Office, on behalf of the municipalities of Het Hogeland, Eemsdelta, Midden-Groningen, Groningen, Oldambt and the Province of Groningen, therefore asked Tom Postmes to determine the extent of the psychosocial problems.

A lot has been invested in helping residents more effectively, and the percentage of residents with problems is also decreasing slightly. That's great, because so things are slightly better on average. But at the same time, the number of residents facing reinforcement and damage has more than doubled since 2016. Those two things combined mean that the total number of residents facing problems is increasing. The researcher expects that number to remain high for at least another 5 to 10 years.
